No wonder Jill's recipes are so easy. She once owned a business that specialized in teaching kids to cook & bake.

Easter Project: Candy Necklaces
by jillbcooks  3/24/2009 10:56:00 AM

Different members of my family celebrate different holidays.  Some celebrate Easter and others celebrate Passover.  As you can guess, there is a lot of preparation to do.  Next week I will be writing more about Passover, but today I am focusing on a fun project for kids which is great for Easter and can be modified for any event, such as birthday parties, Valentine’s Day, or even a rainy afternoon when kids are stuck indoors: making candy necklaces.

As much fun as holidays can be, they also run the risk of being a bit boring for kids.  Reuniting with family is fun, but without activities to keep kids occupied they can get into some shenanigans or be underfoot when moms are trying to juggle socializing and cooking the family meal. For this reason and in my role as wacky fun aunt, I am a big proponent of planning activities for kids.

To make candy necklaces, you will need: plastic wrap, ribbon, scissors, silk flowers or embellishments and, of course, candy.

You can use fabric net, tulle or colored cellophane in place of plastic wrap.  You can also use fabric or curling ribbon.  I like inexpensive spools of fabric ribbon.  And, you can even cut the ribbon in advance to keep scissors away from kids.

Begin by tearing off a piece of plastic wrap about 3 feet long.
Smooth it out on a table or countertop.
Place candies at intervals in the center of the plastic wrap, leaving space at ends of wrap.

Fold plastic wrap over candies.

Tie ribbons on each side of every candy pile to keep candies separated.

Tie on embellishments like silk flowers.

Either tie together the ends of plastic wrap, or tie a length of ribbon between them to make necklace.

To eat candies, gently tear open plastic wrap.

Important: Kids should be supervised by an adult while wearing and playing with these.  This is not suitable for babies or toddlers to wear.  Visit my blog on Thursday to learn about Easter ideas especially for toddlers.

By the way, these make great gifts for kids and adults alike.  Necklaces made with truffles and pretty satin ribbons would be a big hit for grown-up siblings and in-laws.

I love this idea! I have been thinking if I know any kids who would love this. Guess what, as I was typing this I thought of my daughter who teaches GA's at our church. The girls would love this. I am going to tell her about it. Thanks, crafts106t
