Christmas Dinner, Country Style

While we were out and about running holiday errands today, my husband hooked up his I-Phone in the car to play Christmas music to get us in a holiday frame of mind. His collection of music is varied, with The Muppets singing Twelve Days of Christmas to Run-DMC’s Christmas in Hollis to Dean Martin’s White Christmas. He decided that his favorite Christmas song is by Bing Crosby called Christmas Dinner, Country Style. Until he downloaded it a couple of years ago, I had never even heard of this song. It tells the story of a large family’s holiday dinner and mixes in some square dancing calls at the same time. The song mentions turkey, duck, country ham, stuffing, black eyed peas, and—what seems best to me—huckleberry muffins. Check out the lyrics here (I don’t think they are exactly right, though).

In talking about the song, we got to talking about Christmas feasts. As a northerner (I’m originally from Buffalo, New York), we’ve always followed my parents’ food traditions (Canadian on my mom’s side and Italian on my dad’s). I haven’t ever thought about making a “regional” feast before, but we agreed that it would be fun. This year we are going to be doing our traditional Italian feast on Christmas day. We’re having tortellini soup, antipasto salad, orecchiete, probably braciole and whatever else my mom feels like making (I am responsible for the first four dishes). We’ll finish it off with an ice cream roll made with spumoni.
What are your holiday traditions? Do you enjoy a certain kind of cuisine?
