There are few things that I love with the same burning intensity that I love cake. One of those things is the internet. I am rarely without my laptop, and, if my cholesterol level would allow, I would try very hard to be without cake just as rarely. Alas, but I have found a way to have my (virtual) cake online.
I have a few favorite blogs that are dedicated solely to cake. One is called Pictures of Cake, and it charts the adventures of an ambitious baker. Every other Thursday she holds an event called Cake Thursday and brings a cake to work to share with co-workers. Wouldn’t that make Thursdays brighter?
Another truly fun (and inspiring) blog is Cake Wrecks, which is dedicated to documenting “when professional cakes go horribly, hilariously wrong.” It features some truly beautiful professional cakes, but also cakes with funny misspellings and mistakes and some truly unpretty cakes, too. This is a great blog to browse as a break in the middle of a stressful day.
My most favorite, though, is Mmmeliacakes.com, which shows the creations of a teenage baker. Watching the evolution of her cakes over the blog posts is amazing—she is self-taught and is doing beautiful fondant work. I especially love her blog because it shows how creative young bakers can be. Baking can really be a form of self-expression!
I have been visiting these blogs recently to get inspiration for a cake that I am designing. The theme of the cake is classical Greece and Rome—think Plato, Aristotle, philosophy and education. The cake needs to serve about 100 people. I am thinking I may do a cupcake cake with fondant decorations. I would love your input and ideas.
