Cooking is a novel and fun way to celebrate a birthday. Cooking parties are appropriate for children ages 2 to teen, and can be scaled appropriately so kids can enjoy a hands-on experience. Children as young as two could decorate cookies with adult support. Children as young as four can make cookies from a mix with adult leading them through the steps. Older elementary-age children can follow an adult’s directions. Tweens can make cookies with an adult’s supervision.
The key to a successful kids cooking activity is preparation, so the entire process of cooking is controlled and kids can have a fun experience in a safe environment.
Here are some hints for a successful party:
- Physical space is important for a successful cooking party. Use an island or cover a table with a disposable tablecloth.
- Each child needs an individual workspace, but it can be small, like the size of a sheet of paper.
- If making and baking cookies, give each child a piece of parchment paper about that size for placing their creations on for baking (before baking, number the parchment sheets so each young baker gets his or her own cookies back after baking).
- When decorating cookies, a piece of waxed paper will make a great work surface.
- Kids need to be able to pass supplies, so plastic containers or disposable bowls are great for frosting and sprinkles.
- Keep your cooking area separate from your eating/party area.
- Give guests cooking related party favors. Betty Crocker cookie pouches tucked into an oven mitt with a colorful spatula would be memorable.
- Keep kids entertained with related activities.
