Heirloom Fruits and Vegetables
by jillbcooks 5/26/2010 7:03:00 PM

I am getting excited to see the beginnings of plants sprout in my garden beds.  One of the reasons that I am so excited is that I started and used some heirloom vegetable seeds.  “Heirloom” as it applies to seeds or plants just means growing varieties that have been grown at earlier times, basically “old fashioned” varieties that have gone out of fashion, perhaps because they require extra tending or are not so pretty.  I like to cook with heirloom fruits and vegetables because they are so different looking.  If you’ve ever seen some heirloom tomatoes, they can be deep purple, pink, and even striped.  Here is a picture of a wa...

How Does Your Garden Grow?
by Heidi at Betty Crocker 5/11/2009 11:07:00 AM

I’ve been hearing and reading a lot about Victory gardens these days. Times are tough and it makes a lot of sense to grow your own vegetables, fruits and herbs. According to Wickipedia: “Victory gardens, also called war gardens or food gardens for defense, were vegetable, fruit and herb gardens planted at private residences in United States, United Kingdom, Canada and Germany during World War I and World War II to reduce the pressure on the public food supply brought on by the war effort. Breaking News: Kids Eat Twice As Many Vegetables
by jillbcooks 3/3/2009 8:08:00 AM

I read a news story yesterday about children and vegetables that was fascinating.  My first business—which offered cooking lessons for kids—was called Picky Eaters, so I was regularly invited by groups to give talks about how to get finicky kids to eat a wider variety of foods.  Parents were always seeking hints and tricks to get children to try vegetables, specifically. According to the study featured in the news story, “186 four-year-olds were given regular carrots and, on other lunch days, they were given the same ...

Resolve to Sneak More Vitamins into Your Diet
by jillbcooks 1/8/2009 8:50:00 AM

In the season of resolutions, lots of people resolve to stop doing things—stop smoking, stop eating deep fried foods, stop spending money.  Ceasing a behavior can be very difficult to do, let alone turn it into a regular habit.  This year I am resolving to add rather than take away; I am resolving to add more fruits and vegetables and to try to find innovative ways to do so.  When it comes to make changes, I am the type of person who inches toward rather than runs toward it, so I like to make incremental change, even if it is a bit of fruit and veg here and there.  This past weekend my husband and I had friends over for dinner.  I made it my goal to ...

It’s a beautiful day here in Minnesota. I’m looking forward to getting home and working in my garden. I hope to dig up and divide some daylilies. I only grow flowers. I never had much luck with vegetables. I usually lost my tomatoes to ...
