by AndiatBettyCrocker 5/2/2011 12:04:00 PM

Hey guys—are you looking for a delicious and easy meal to make for Mother’s Day?  Why not grill a turkey? Our son, Jason has agreed to make Turkey on the Grill for the  three generations of moms in his life: his grandma Shirley, his wife Katie and me. I’ll round out o...

Taco Burger Sliders
by AndiatBettyCrocker 9/2/2010 9:08:00 AM

Cooking is easier if everyone helps with a part of the meal. When Blake joined us at the cabin last weekend, I put him to work making tot-size burger patties, seasoned with crushed tortilla chips and taco sauce. We put some tortilla chips in a resealable plastic bag to make crushing easier. What 3-year old doesn’t like to crush, smash and stomp things? Then we mixed the crushed chips with taco sauce, salt, pepper and ground beef. This recipe for ...

Grilling Burgers on Memorial Day
by AndiatBettyCrocker 5/31/2010 5:00:00 AM

I don’t need to tell you that burgers are popular—always have been for Americans. What better sandwich to serve on an all-American holiday than grilled burgers? Bacon Burgers have just a little twist from a basic burger. The bacon goes inside these burgers, instead of on the top and they are seasoned with a little barbecue sauce instead of ketchup. They are topped with the spring sweet onions (...

Impromptu Potato Salad and Brats
by jillbcooks 4/14/2010 7:50:00 PM

My husband has a group of friends and colleagues who get together at our house every month to discuss politics, philosophy and other lofty subjects.  Since it is his gathering, he has been clear that he likes to take care of the arrangements—making food to serve and clutter-busting to make sure our house looks presentable—rather than task me with more chores.  Except this week…I bailed him out.  He texted me that he would be stuck at work indefinitely, but guests would arrive in an hour.  On my way home from work, I stopped at the butcher for brats and charcoal and then at the bakery for rolls.  Easy. If you read my blog regu...

Easter Weekend Change of Plans
by jillbcooks 4/3/2010 8:12:00 PM

The past few days have been unseasonably warm.  Each day, the weatherman has called for rain, but we have mostly managed to avoid it.  My DH and I have been seizing the opportunity to get a jump on yard work.  We have been clearing plants, turning over the soil, and picking up leaves and debris.  We actually got everything we wanted to get completed accomplished, so we cleaned the garage and decided to pull out the grill and some patio furniture.  Since tomorrow is calling for 64 degrees and sunny skies, I have changed direction on our Easter dinner.  Instead of the traditional plan—baked ham, pierogies, au gratin potatoes, and steamed asparagus, tomorr...

Fourth of July Food Safety
by jillbcooks 7/2/2009 8:20:00 AM

About ten years ago, I attended training to become a personal chef.  The training detailed just about every aspect of being a personal chef, especially food safety.  Since a personal chef usually cooks one or two weeks’ worth of food for clients, knowing how to cool, package and store food properly is extremely important.  When clients pay for the luxury of having someone else do the cooking, they need to trust the way their food was handled and that it won’t make them sick.  When we entertain or host guests, it is important to extend the same kind of care.  The Fourth of July presents some challenges when it comes to food safety, since so many of us c...

Take it Outside
by Heidi at Betty Crocker 5/20/2009 11:19:00 AM

Here in Minnesota we seem to have skipped spring and headed straight into summer. Temps were in the 90s yesterday and weather forecasters are predicting more of the same today. I officially kicked off the season with an impromptu al fresco dinner with my friend Lisa. She suggested we  grill so I rolled my charcoal grill out of the garage, dusted it off and rummaged around my recipe collection until I found one in which I had all the ingredients on hand (not a simple task, mind you). Lisa volunteered to do the grilling which was fine by me. She rounded up the charcoal while I got the chicken ready. The recipe was quite simple; just a rub made of garlic, dried herbs, boui...

It's Alive!
by Heidi at Betty Crocker 7/14/2008 6:08:00 PM

When I get together with my neighbors for dinner, I’m usually asked to bring a salad. It’s not that the salad I make is unusual in any way—it’s just your basic lettuce tossed with some tomato, bell pepper and green onions—but I always serve it with Julie's Dressing and it seems to be a hit. AC and Luke turned me on to this lettuce, which is grown locally. It’s alive when you buy it; still attached to the roots and everything. It’s cheaper than bagged lettuce and I swear it tastes much fresher. Plus, it lets me use my ...

More Grilling
by Heidi at Betty Crocker 7/9/2008 2:44:00 PM

Last Saturday Luke and AC came over and, after a quick trip to the grocery store, we made dinner together (they are still without a working kitchen). The menu included grilled chicken, green beans and garlic bread. We didn’t use a single recipe (I probably shouldn’t encourage that since my job depends on people needing recipes.)Luke seasoned the chicken with salt, pepper and garlic before throwing it on the grill. AC sautéed some red onions in oil until they were almost caramelized and then tossed the green beans, along with a splash of Julie’s D...
