Bacon and Tomatoes—A Dynamic Duo
by AndiatBettyCrocker 8/26/2010 7:53:00 AM

The first thing I heard today on the morning news was about a new food item being served at the Minnesota State Fair called Chicken-Fried Bacon (thick-cut bacon battered, breaded and fried and served in a boat covered with gravy). Why doesn’t that surprise me? Last year, it was chocolate-covered bacon, which was actually pretty tasty. And we all know about and love bacon ice cream and ...

Bacon Is the New Black
by jillbcooks 8/19/2010 11:06:00 AM

In case you haven’t heard, bacon is the new black.  For a while now, food magazines and blogs tout the presence of bacon in all things, even sweets like doughnuts and cookie bars.  I had been thinking about a salad I had at a white tablecloth steakhouse in March.  It was simple enough—a classic wedge—with iceberg lettuce, tomato, blue cheese and Applewood Smoked Bacon.  The bacon was so, so, so good—sort of chewy, sort of crispy, and definitely cooked with something sweet like brown sugar.  I wanted to make some noteworthy bacon to add to a salad.  After some research, I made this rec...

Bacon, Lettuce and Tomato Dip at Sunset on the Beach
by AndiatBettyCrocker 6/8/2010 6:59:00 AM

We took a few vacation days and spent Memorial Day week at our cabin. During the week, we were invited to a friend’s home for dinner and I volunteered to bring an appetizer that we could enjoy at the beach. It’s quick and easy to make, and colorful too. Arrange shredded romaine lettuce in a bowl (or on a fish platter!). Mix sour cream, mayo, and cooked bacon and spoon over the lettuce. Top with chopped tomatoes...

Baked Egg Soufflés—A Tasty Breakfast for Mom on Mother’s Day
by AndiatBettyCrocker 5/7/2010 9:41:00 AM

Sometimes when Jack and I stay in town on a weekend, we head over to the Panera Bread Bakery-Café, near our home, for breakfast. Their Baked Egg Soufflés are my favorite breakfast to order, and it's hard to choose between the Four Cheese, Spinach & Bacon, Spinach & Artichoke and Turkey Sausage & Potatoes flavors. My favorite is Turkey Sausage & Potatoes. Here is one cut open. Because I lik...

BACON: On Appetizers or in Fudge?
by AndiatBettyCrocker 12/18/2009 10:22:00 AM

Could any ingredient be more popular than bacon, these days? We have been noticing recipes for Bacon Ice Cream and bacon in cookies, candies and more. The ice cream was really good – a combination of the rich, sweet cream with the crisp and salty bacon. Have you tried any of these interesting flavor combinations with bacon? Let me know in the comments box if you have. Kristen (Assistant Food Editor) came up with the idea to send her friend...

Watney the Wonder Dog
by Heidi at Betty Crocker 2/4/2009 10:18:00 AM

This is Watney. To say Watney had a rough weekend is an understatement. He had several severe seizures on Friday and then went into what AC could only describe as a “zombie-like state” for about 72 hours. During this state he didn’t recognize anyone and he spent more than20 hours frantically pacing in circles. (I could hear him panting in the background when AC called from the vet.) He actually wore out one of the pads on his paws. After trips to both their local vet and the University of Minnesota veterinary clinic, A...

Cook and Bake Safely
by jillbcooks 1/27/2009 9:05:00 AM

You know that sound, the one that is an absolute annoyance?  Though tempting to ignore, I learned last week that attention must be paid to a screeching fire alarm.  When I was a kids, the sound of the fire alarm on a Sunday morning meant that mom’s bacon was done.  It would be my job to respond to it by standing on a chair and waving at the fire detector with a dish towel until it stopped.  Now, I live in a building with multiple units and my home shares a wall with my neighbors’ place.  I heard their fire alarm going off and figured it would stop, that someone burned toast or something.  It didn’t stop, though.  And soo...
