Ice Cream Sodas—A Cool Way to Beat the Heat
by AndiatBettyCrocker  7/17/2008 10:48:00 AM

Here’s an idea for a cool party—have an ice cream soda bar. It's a fun and easy way to entertain lots of people on a hot summer day or night. Just set out tubs of ice cream and several different flavors of soda (that would be "pop" if you live in Minnesota) and let everyone make their own. We tried this last week in the test kitchens as a way to celebrate a couple of staff birthdays and everyone loved it.

We provided plastic straws and tall plastic spoons to add a festive touch.

Here are some flavor ideas (in the order of the photo above):

Boston Cooler - Vanilla ice cream and ginger ale

Brown Cow - Chocolate ice cream and root beer + chocolate syrup

Orange Cow - Vanilla ice and orange soda - this is my personal favorite because it tastes like a Dreamsicle

Root Beer Float - Vanilla ice cream and root beer

Pink Cow - Vanilla ice and strawberry soda

fRegarding the 'Boston Cooler': In the 30's my mother made this concoction which was and is refreshing. At that time she called it an 'Orange Blossom' and everyone knew what they were getting.

Ham Balls on Pineapple Slices 2 eggs 1/2 cup applesauce 1/8 teaspoon pepper 1 1/2 teaspoons dry mustard 1/2 teaspoon salt 1/2 cup fine dry bread crumbs 1 1/2 lb coarsely ground, cooked ham (about 3 1/2 cups) 1 can (1 lb 4 oz) sliced pineapple Combine eggs, applesauce, pepper, mustard, salt and bread crumbs. Add ham and mix thoroughly. Drain pineapple and reserve syrup. Place pineapple slices in 13x9-inch baking dish. Form ham mixture into balls and place one on each pineapple slice. Baste ham balls with reserved syrup. Bake at 375°F. for 30 minutes. Makes 8 to 10 servings.
