Sports Sunday Celebration

Sports Sunday Celebration

Let the games begin! Sunday afternoons are an excellent time to get friends together and celebrate championship football games with good food. This game-watching menu has a Tex-Mex vibe that’s high on flavor and easy on the cook. Just follow our tips and you'll be known as everyone’s favorite party hosts.

Tips from the Experts

Karen

"Cupcakes are the perfect snack to the ball park or soccer field—no utensils are needed and always have just the right amount."

Karen, Editor - BettyCrocker.com

Let Your Invitations Bowl Over Your Guests

  • Make an invitation to resemble a scoreboard. Decorate it with sports stickers found at party and gift stores. Indicate "The clock is running, so don't be late."

  • Or look at the many choices for doing online invitations. They are perfect for these casual events and you’ll more likely get an RSVP!

Get to Know the Stars

  • Pin the name of a current player, coach or game-winning MVP on the backs of guests as they arrive. Guests then have to guess who they are by asking questions of others.

  • Look for more trivia to add into your event by checking out official NFL history.

Decorate with Style

  • Create team pennants from colored card stock, and attach to wooden sticks. Place a bunch in a spray-painted foam ball for a centerpiece. Scatter collector sports cards around the centerpiece.

  • Use our centerpiece-worthy Football Cupcake Pull-Aparts on the serving table, using a green table runner or that Easter basket grass to extend the playing field!

Up to 2 Weeks Ahead

  • Bake cookies and bars of your choice. All can be made ahead and frozen; wait to frost Rich German Chocolate Brownies and Chocolate Chunk Blondies until thawed.
  • Make Chili-Lime Chex® Mix; store in airtight container.

The Day Before

  • Mix and freeze ingredients for Frozen Strawberry Margaritas.
  • Chill ingredients for Pineapple Limeade and other beverages your guests will enjoy.
  • Thaw cookies or bars made ahead. Frost Rich German Chocolate Brownies and Chocolate Chunk Blondies when thawed.

The Morning Of

  • Cook filling for Slow Cooker Tex-Mex Turkey Wraps or Slow Cooker Mexican Chicken Tostadas; prep and refrigerate other fillings you can do ahead.
  • Roast garlic for "Healthified" Garlic Guacamole.
  • Shred lettuce and assemble ingredients for Seven-Layer Bean Dip.
  • Make Cilantro-Lime Salsa; cover and refrigerate.
  • Make "Healthified" Mexican Bean Salad; cover and refrigerate.
  • Set up drinks serving area.

One to Two Hours Before

  • Make Texas Coleslaw; cover and refrigerate.

Last Minute Prep

  • Finish assembling Seven-Layer Bean Dip.
  • Finish making "Healthified" Garlic Guacamole, including baked tortilla chips [make plenty!].
  • Finish making and offer guests choice of beverages as they arrive.
  • Set out appetizers.
  • Set out fixings for turkey wraps or tostados so guests can assemble as they like.
  • Set out remaining foods on the menu buffet style.
  • Pass that big plate of cookies and bars. Offer coffee.
