Let's Go Fly a Kite Birthday Party

Flying Kite Birthday Bars

Up, up in the air, junior kite fliers, for a fantastic birthday party if you dare! Clear off a large work table, spread out the art supplies and watch kids busily make kites they actually can fly. This party is so full of fun and activity, kids will forget they are celebrating a birthday for someone else. Don't forget the video camera.

Tips from the Experts

Betty Crocker Cook - Kristen Olsen

"Send invitations two weeks ahead. Include date and time (and end time), activities and anything guests should bring, and the menu--in case allergies are an issue."

Kristen, Food Editor - Betty Crocker Kitchens

High-Flying Invitations

  • Make kite-shaped invitations from construction paper; attach a string tail for authenticity. Seal the envelope with kite stickers available in gift and party stores.
  • Tell guests to dress for outdoor fun.

Fun-Time Food

  • Make kite-shaped individual pizzas by shaping dough into diamond shapes. Kids can shape  the dough on pieces of parchment paper on cookie sheets and personalize their own pizzas!

Up, Up and Away Activities

  • Make kites that kids can fly. Check out your local library, bookstore or the Internet for easy patterns. Videos may also be available at libraries.
Go out and fly the kites. Enlist a couple of parents (hopefully ones with kite experience) to help get the kites off the ground. Have a few inexpensive kites available to replace ones that bite the dust.
  • In case of rain, have a backup plan such as a video about kite flying, or have a backup game  such as "pin the kite string on the kite."

Down-to-Earth Decorations

  • Hang paper kites from the ceiling.
  • Make kite-shaped place mats from construction paper. Enlist the kids to help. Cover the table with a brightly colored paper cover. If party supplies aren't available in a kite theme, purchase bright, solid-colored supplies, and have the kids sticker them with kite stickers.
  • Up to 2 Weeks Before

Place scoops of ice cream in muffin pan lined with paper baking cups; cover and freeze.
  • Make strawberry ice cubes for Strawberry Coolers.

The Day Before

  • Prepare toppings for Create-a-Pizza; wrap separately and refrigerate.
  • Bake and decorate Kite Bars with the help of the birthday boy or girl.

The Morning Of

  • Make pizza dough; refrigerate tightly wrapped.

About 15 Minutes Before the Meal

  • Place pizza toppings and dough out for kids to prepare.
  • Finish preparing Strawberry Coolers.

About 15 Minutes Before Serving Dessert

  • Remove ice cream from freezer.
