Apple Pie Cake

Sometimes you want cake and sometimes you want pie. My Apple Pie Cake is both, making it a perfect addition to your Thanksgiving dessert table.

I have a confession to make: This cake came out of my desire to not make a pie crust. And not to have to run to the grocery store the night before Thanksgiving. I was planning on making an apple crumb pie and just did not feel like dealing with pie crust. I was tired, sick of cleaning my kitchen and so over washing dishes and ready to call it a night.

So I took a look around my pantry and found a box of cake mix. Perfect, always a good place to start. I combined it with traditional apple pie filling ingredients and the rest is history. Sometimes the best ideas are born out of necessity, right?

Gather your ingredients.

In a small bowl, mix together flour, brown sugar and salt.
Add butter, and rub together until it resembles a crumble. Set aside.
Toss the apples with brown sugar, cinnamon and lemon juice.
Make the cake batter according to the directions on the package.
Pour the batter into a 9 x 13 pan that has been sprayed with cooking spray.
Spread the apples over the batter.
Spread the crumble over the apples.
Bake for 30 to 35 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
Sprinkle the cake with powdered sugar and cut into squares.

I just baked this today. It was a hit, everybody loved it. I served it with a scope of vanilla ice cream (like apple pie a la mode) and it was delicious! Thank you for this easy to bake and yummy recipe!!!

A cooking temperature would be amazing. Not having the recipe in the comments and with the actual recipe would be helpful as well!!!

The temperature and time would be the ones on the cake mix box.  I think it is 375 degrees for 25-30 mins in a 13x9 glass flat dish.

This would also be good drizzled with caramel sauce...or maybe both icecream and caramel sauce! Yummmm :)

I tried this last night - while it tasted ok the topping sank into the batter and made the cake mushy.  I remade it leaving the topping off and kept it chilled, which kept it crumbly like a crumb cake.  At  20 minutes into the baking I then added the topping and then finished baking for 18 minutes and it came out great.

Also the actual recipe does not tell you to sprinkle with powdered sugar.

Please show ingredients in measured quantities rather than each. 6 apples can be 3 lbs or 5 lbs. Or show cups of sliced peeled apples.

That glass measuring cup equals 2 liters, and 2 liters equals 8 cups.....so there you go :)

Excellent cake! Made it for my mom's birthday and it was a hit! My nephew even posted it on Facebook. It took me a lot longer than 35 minutes in the oven, but it turned out just fine.

I make mine with a lemon cake and apple pie filling. The 2 flavors are great together.
