Plum Crisp Or Cobbler

Marier,

Here is a recipe my grandmother used to make.  I hope you enjoy it if you make it; it's very tasty.  It brings back memories!

DeeMarie

Plum Crisp

4 to 5 cups plums, sliced

8 tbsp. butter or margarine, divided
1 tsp. ground cinnamon
½ tsp. ground nutmeg
1/4 tsp. ground cloves
½ cup all-purpose flour
½ cup oatmeal

½ cup granulated sugar
3/4 cup brown sugar, packed

Preheat oven to 375°F.  Butter a 9-inch square baking dish.

Wash and slice plums and place them in the prepared baking dish. Dot fruit with 3 tablespoons of butter.

With a pastry blender or fork, combine spices, flour, oatmeal, granulated and brown sugars and 5 tablespoons butter until texture resembles small peas. Sprinkle mixture evenly over the fruit.

Bake for 30 minutes until fruit is tender and topping is golden brown.

Note:  You can substitute peaches, nectarines or pears.

Serves 9.

Leila,

My personal favorite is to use fresh (not dried) Stanley Prunes when they are available.

DeeMarie,

You are right, fresh fruit of any kind is the best.  We are very lucky to have such a variety of fruit's and vegetable's here.  I am unfamiliar with Stanley Prunes though, and at this minute I can't think of the name of the plum's we have here.  Senior Moment!!!

Thank's again for your help.

Plum Crisp Or Cobbler

Leila,

I live in the Mid-Atlantic region.  My grandfather had Stanley Prunes in his orchard; we used to climb the trees, pick the prunes and eat them right there in the orchard.  (Fond memories!)  They are soooo yummy!  My dad also had Stanley Prunes in his orchard.  And I used to have them in my orchard.  Stanley Prunes, however, are prone to a blight of some type.  The trees just seem to get weaker with every season until they finally have to be cut down.

But, every summer I look forward to finding them in our local grocery stores.  Usually the larger chains don't carry them.  I've been lucky the last two years and have been able to find them.
