Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental

I have been surfing the web to find sources of the Rice Oriental flavor of Hamburger Helper, only to find it is discontinued.  The amount of other people I came across in my search who are as chagrined as I am about its loss is noteworthy, and I wanted to make TPTB aware of how greatly it is missed by many.  It is actually a meal I would make if my stomach was upset, as something about it had a soothing effect on my system (medicinal argument?).  Pleeeeze bring it back!

I couldn't agree more.  I have 4 picky children and rice oriental was the only flavor they would eat.  After reading all these comments I find it hard to believe "no sales" was the reason for discontinuing it.

I too would love to see that one come back.  It was my favorite!!

Another company should jump on the band wagon & start making this recipe.

Add me to the list of people who have searched in vain for HHRO, only to disappointedly discover that it's no longer available at ANY location.

That said, the recipe PattyatBettyCrocker provided is close.  I think, anyway.  I had to make do with what I had on hand, and this is what I did.  (Also, mine is a tiny bit healthier and I make some substitutions; see notes at end.)

INGREDIENTS

  • 1 Lb. ground beef

  • Garlic Powder

  • Onion Salt

  • 1 T. oyster sauce

  • 2 T. soy sauce

  • 1 can mushroom gravy

  • 2 C. cooked rice

DIRECTIONS

  1. Cook ground beef.  Season to taste with garlic powder and onion salt.  Drain.

  2. Stir in oyster sauce.

  3. Stir in soy sauce.

  4. Add in cooked rice and gravy; heat through.

NOTES

  • I used ground turkey and brown rice for a slightly healthier version.  As such, I didn't need to drain the ground turkey because it renders much less grease.

  • I used cooked rice because I already had it in the fridge.  You can modify the recipe with Patty's version if you'd prefer to make this a true "one pot" meal.

  • I've made this with both canned mushroom gravy and canned beef gravy.  The mushroom gravy version provided a better, more authentic HHRO flavor.  (I don't care for whole mushrooms, however, which is why I left out the sliced mushrooms called for in the original recipe.)

  • I think the oyster sauce is the "secret ingredient" that gives this recipe that signature HHRO flavor, but this dish can be made without it.

  • I like to add about a teaspoon of teriyaki sauce to each serving, just because I love the flavor.  However, at that point this becomes such a sodium-rich dish that it might be too much for some people.

I'm so happy to have found this site so that I can make my own HHRO!

Because my husband loves Rice Oriental so much I am willing to try out this recipie.  I am with the rest of you in that I don't understand why they would quit making something that so many are missing.  My husband always asks have you found any more.  Now, I will have to tell him they discontinued making and he will complain more than me (but just to me and those he works with, not on this website).  I agree with the others that most of the Hamburger Helper items out there are not very good and I only have 1 other one that I buy.  It would be nice if you would even consider doing a special limited time manufacturing of it.  I am sure with all of us here, we would buy everything you made.

Please bring Rice Oriental flavor of hamburger helper back.  I have one box left, I bought a mass amount when I saw it a while ago.  This has been my favorite food for 32 years.  I hate to think I will only be able to have it one more time.  Please bring it back as a classic.  Others feel the same or there would be no posting for it.

2/19/2009 6:58 PM

I don't know what the original HH Rice Oriental tasted like, but I used the asian chicken fried rice with hamberger and it was great!

2/21/2009 5:51 PM

All this time I thought it was just my store that did not carry Rice Oriental.  I would have to get it when I went to visit my mom in Tyler and then I would stock up.  Recently I used up my last box and have been thinking about trying to get some more and now I find out it is discontinued.  I am so upset.  I have been looking at every new store I go to hoping that they will carry it and now I know there is no more hope.  Please, please bring it back.  I have been trying the new kinds but none of them compare to Rice Oriental.  If this is the way we are treated for liking one specific one, then I will quit using Hamburger Helper completely until they bring Rice Oriental back.  It is that good!  My husband is not too fond of rice so I would always make two different kinds because me and the kids love it and they would eat some of the other kind too.  So if any one finds out where we can get our fix satisfied please let us know.  Until then I am going to try the recipe posted on here.  Thanks so much.

just saw they updated the HH lineup. a new variety "Beef fried rice" was just added to the Asian Helper line or whatever its called (same line they had RO under). I haven't cooked it up yet but when I do im going to omit the eggs. the mix does include like some peas and maybe carrot pieces but my fingers are crossed the "sauce" is the same.

ITS BACK RICE ORIENTAL IS BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!*

Its being sold as *NEW* Asian (Hamburger) Helper-- "Beef Fried Rice".
The differences are there's a few tiny pieces of carrot bits and peas in the dried sauce mix. I didnt really taste them though. Also the instructions call to add some oil and 2 eggs and to scramble them and mix it all together since its beef fried rice. But I skipped the egg part of the instructions and it tastes the same as our ol' friend rice oriental. Its in stores now I am going to stock up in case they stop making it lol!

I compared ingredients of Rice Oriental to Beef Fried Rice HH and they are virtually the same save for the peas/carrot pieces and such.

Thanks Betty!

I rarely post on boards but I had to sign up just to comment on this. After a long time of not finding RO I finally decided to do a search to see if I could find the reason. I'm not buying the company's excuse. RO has been hard to find for many, many years. Out of all the flavors it was the only one that was usually sold out. If they don't keep it on the shelves then of course it's not going to sell. Appearantly I'm not the only one who had this problem. When I found it I always bought several boxes of it and maybe 1 or 2 of the other flavors. Since it has been impossible to find for the past couple of years I don't buy any of the other flavors. Maybe if BC took a look at their marketing dept. they'd find the real problem.

I, too, don't do message boards. But, after returning from grocery shopping, and AGAIN, looking for RO, and not finding it, I found this site.  No wonder I haven't been able to find it the last couple years!! It was our family's favorite.  My daughter, who is 32, has been looking for it, also.  It was a comfort food to us, and, yes, if you had an upset stomach, it was great.  I made it for years, and would ususally add fresh tomatoes, green pepper, and a can of mushroom soup to it (that recipe was on the box in the 70's). I cooked for 6-8 people at night, often stretching with it with a little extra minute rice thrown in.  WHY WOULD YOU DISCONTINUE IT?  The majority of your hamburger helper products don't compare to this one!  I don't want the Asian rice, or whatever, please bring back the original.  Thanking you in advance!

I agree with totally!!!!! I loved the rice oriental brand of hamburger helper and now I can't find it anywhere. I live in Texas and I have called friends in Virginia just to get some of this brand and now it is no longer there either. I don't even purchase any of the other brands because they are not what I like. They really need to bring back the Rice Oriental!!!!!

5/17/2009 11:34 AM

Exactly, I don't want the Asian rice, I want the original rice oriental. I don't want any substitutions or anything added and I don't want close enough recipes. Betty Crocker truly needs to bring the RICE ORIENTAL!!!!!! I use to buy at least 8 to 10 boxes at a time. PLEASE GIVE ME BACK MY RICE ORIENTAL, I'M STARVING HERE!!!!!!!!!

Hi my name is Lee and I was wondering if you could send me the receipe that you have that tastes like the real

Hamburger helper oriental rice?

Just like everyone else, I really miss this dish and wish they would just bring it back.

Yesterday I seen at our local market they came out with a new rice dish and for a moment I got excited until

I noticed that It was not the oriental rice.

Thank you for your time,

Lee

I don't get why they can't just relaunch it - it obviously got buyers. Its better than some of the other HH brands I have tried. And I did try the Asian Rice and it was nasty - overly salty and nothing like RO. I think its already been discontinued.

5/26/2009 2:28 PM

This is my favorite of all the hamburger helper dishes.  The next one would be cheeseburger but it couldn't hold a candle for Rice Oriental to light.  R.O. H.H. is the BOMB in home prepared fast food.  When I was pregnant and everything made me sick, I ate this.  When I was feeling low I made Rice Oriental Hamburger Helper.  Please bring it back. Yours M.A. Ward
