Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental

I have been surfing the web to find sources of the Rice Oriental flavor of Hamburger Helper, only to find it is discontinued.  The amount of other people I came across in my search who are as chagrined as I am about its loss is noteworthy, and I wanted to make TPTB aware of how greatly it is missed by many.  It is actually a meal I would make if my stomach was upset, as something about it had a soothing effect on my system (medicinal argument?).  Pleeeeze bring it back!

Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental was the only one I bought.  My family loves it.   It was my favorite.   I do not understnd why Betty Crocker states it was not a good seller.   They have a bigger customer base for this particular variety then they realize.  The last time I was able to get any was directly from Betty Crocker and the cost for a case of it was outragious.  I paid 3 times what the stores normally sell it for, but bought it anyway because we all craved it so much.  Now I have none left and can't get anymore.

I purchase many Betty Crocker products,  but Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental was the one I purchased the most.

BRING IT BACK PLEASE

I agree with everyone else.  We have been looking for Rice Oriental in the stores for a long time.  Please bring it back.

I have part of what you want.. The method is easy to do so don't worry about it. First, break up some pasta (spaghetti noodles)...with your hands...Make them one half to one quarter inch long..Over low heat brown pasta and rice in butter for a few minutes. Add in some onion, either dried or fresh. Set aside. This gives you the basic start. Add your burger and some "cumin powder"..

Add some fresh vegies and cook everything with water seasoned with beef or chicken buillon cubes until the pasta and rice absorbes the water...

IF I CAN'T DO IT--IT CAN'T BE DONE!

Here is a recipe that I have tried and with a it is almost exactly like the ric oriental that I remember.

1 lb ground beef

1 1/2 - 2 cups instant rice

2 packages instant brown gravy mix (or 5 beef bouillon cubes)

2-3 tablespoons soy sauce

3-4 cups water

Salt, Pepper, onion powder, garlic powder to taste

1. Brown beef in skillet

2. Add all other ingrediants (I usually add 2 cups of water to start with and then add 1/2 cup as needed)

3. If using bouillon, make sure you add it before to the water before the other ingrediants to dissolve it.

4. Bring to a boil, reduce heat, and cover.

5. Cooking time varies, but with instant rice it usually takes about 10-15 minutes. I like to let it sit of the heat for a couple of minutes to let the sauce thicken a little.

****I am still in the process of mastering this recipe. A little tweeking for personal taste might be needed.

I ran out of my last case of HHRO and I just can't believe it's gone.  If it would've helped I would've bought more.  I agree completely with most everything said so far in this string.  How many more "Italian" or "Mexican" themes do we need?

I want to rant and swear.  I want to cry and scream.

Patty at Betty Crocker:

Thank you for contacting General Mills regarding Hamburger Helper rice oriental.

Unfortunately, due to lack of sales, this product was discontinued and is no longer available.

We regret any inconvenience this caused and hope you continue to enjoy the many other products we offer.

My reply...

Thank you for confirming the demise of Hamburger Helper Rice Oriental.

Unfortunately, due to lack of availability of Rice Oriental, my money will no longer be available to General Mills.

I also regret the inconvenience this caused and I will no longer bother with ANY of the many products you offer.

I can't wait to try out this recipe!  I too was saddened when they discontinued this HH.  I could never find it at the grocery stores and the one day I did they had it on sale and I only bought 1 :(.  If I had known they were going to discontinue it I would have bought all them on the shelf.  Had no clue you could buy this stuff in bulk from General Mills.

I can understand Betty Crocker's decision to cancel Rice Oriental due to low sales, but considering how I had to visit multiple stores to find it I though Betty Crocker might have found a health violation within its recipe, thus leading them to cancel it. Even if the sales were low. The demand isn't nor has it ever been low.  When I first saw the red dot appear at my local grocery stores (red dots mean that item won't be sold anymore) I started buying in bulk.  I was able to keep my collection at 10 boxes up to about 5 months ago.  Now I have one box left.  I am saving that particular box for my birthday.

I used to have a box of Rice Oriental once a week.  NOW!!.  Now I am forced to ration it.  I can't wait to try the recipes that have been posted, but if Betty Crocker truly cared about its consumers then they would resume production of Rice Oriental, but they have cleary stated they will not produce anymore Rice Oriental.  I am fine if they will not produce anymore, but if Betty Crocker NEVER intends to produce and sell Rice Oriental again then at least give us the recipe for Rice Oriental.  You aren't going to lose money to another competitor because someone got your recipe because you don't intend to produce anymore anyway.  If you dont want to make money off of it then give us the official recipe.

Thank you for your time.

For anyone who is interested, we discovered an alternative that is really quite simple and very good! Pick up a box of Beef Rice-A-Roni, add a pound of ground beef, season to taste with soy sauce, and enjoy! It's really quite good! If this suggestion has already been mentioned previously in these forums, please disregard this reply.

YES, YES, YES, What is wrong with this picture,  My family likes Oriental Rice mostr of all.  Great meal after work or on the weekend.  I would make homemade biscuits, some Corn and English Peas for veggies and would have a good meal.  I am so disappointed about this.  I am ready to buy 3 cases of this Oriental Rice.  All three of my children love it.  My son and 1 daughter are married and their family loves it.  When my daughter moved to Houston she would have me buy her 10 boxes of this and mail to her, because she loved it so much.   PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE bring it back.

Oh my gosh, I thought I was the only one, then I thought I was being rediculous making such a big deal over

Hamberger Helper, but now I don't feel so bad... I grew up eating this, Rice Oriental  has allways been my favorite,,

My kids love it too.. for the last 22 years,, Rice Oriental "WAS" the one thing I could make for dinner that I new everyone would eat and finish.

I can not believe that they would discontinue, a money maker like Rice Oriental... WE WANT IT BACK!!!! PLEASE

BRING BACK OUR RICE ORIENTAL!!!!!!!!!

7/8/2008 3:29 PM

BRING BACK OUR RICE ORIENTAL!!! PLEASE

7/8/2008 3:31 PM

I agree with bringing Rice Oriental back it is the only flavor that my son will eat.  If i had known ahead of time that it was going to be discontinued I would have stocked up on it.  I also think that of the remaining varieties they all seem to be to much of the same thing.  Mostly noodles and cheese.  To many Italian and Mexican dishes that are really the same thing only named differently.  How much demand does Betty Crocker need to bring it back?

7/10/2008 9:21 AM

I am extremely upset that BETTY CROCKER has decided to DISCONTINUE Hamburger Helper RICE ORIENTAL!!!  It was the ONLY Hamburger Helper I liked.  Needless to say, I do not purchase any of the others.  They are NOT very TASTY!  RICE ORENTIAL was absoulutely delicious the first day, but even better the next.  I ALWAYS made two boxes for dinner because all my family LOVED it and two boxes would leave enought leftover to take for lunch the next day!  Please BETTY CROCKER rethink this TERRIBLE marketing mistake.  You would make MANY people in UTAH and many other states, according to the e-mails, VERY, VERY HAPPY!!!!!

7/20/2008 6:50 PM

I pray you guys will bring back Rice Oriental... Why don't you bring it back for a limited time at first... PROMOTE the hell out of it... and see what happens. I'd buy a whole case to start... PLEASE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

7/21/2008 4:10 PM

I encourage everybody here to please e-mail Betty Crocker about the return of Rice Oriental.

I also think someone should do a peteition online. It worked for the good n plenty candy from the hershey company. that variety has successfully returned to production.
