ingredient listings for people with allergies

I wonder if there's any chance Betty Crocker can improve their product listings for those of us with food allergies.  For instance, I have corn allergies and am allergic to many corn derivitives.  Am afraid to by some of the Gold Medal brand types of flour and some of their other products because I'm not sure when certain ingredients like maltose or dextrose or fructose are listed whether or not they're derived from corn or not.  For health reasons, I would love to see more detail in labeling instead of just comments like 'natural flavorings'.  I've tried calling companies to find out if certain ingredients are in their foods.  Aside from the usual our ingredients are proprietary response, I often end up talking with someone who has no clue that citric acid might be a product can contain corn and that citric acid come be derived from corn.  The lack of knowledge of employees on what they're actually selling can be downright scary.  The lack of clear labeling is a very frustrating situation for those of us who have serious food allergies.

We appreciate your comments.  Currently General Mills does label in bold on their ingredients when the Top 5 allergens are included: peanuts, tree nuts, eggs, soy, milk products, wheat, fish, and crustaceans.  General Mills also labels for sesame, sunflower, and mollusks.  Please also feel free to contact our staff at General Mills Customer Service. They would be happy to discuss your concerns about the allergens in certain products. They can be reached by clicking the Contact Us link at the bottom of the page.

I agree with you.  My son has a wheat allergy and so many things out there say "dextrose".  Dextrose can, as you know, be derived from corn or wheat.  Sometimes it is even a combo of the two.  To know for certain if it is was dervied from wheat would be a very wonderful thing.  Kudos, though, General Mills for clearly labeling wheat, eggs, soy, dairy and peanut as my son has to be very careful with the amounts of these items he eats as well.

I really appreciate that Better Crocker lists the top allergens since there are so many companies that don't.  The difficult thing for families with allergies to remember which companies lists allergens and which don't because if none are listed we have to assume that the words carmel coloring and flavorings mean dairy...so it would be nice if there are no allergens in the ingredients to maybe write in parenthsis "no allergens".
