Happy National Spaghetti Day! Seriously.
by Heidi at Betty Crocker  1/4/2008 1:58:00 PM

In honor of this little-known food holiday, I’m sharing my favorite spaghetti sauce recipe with you. It’s my mom’s recipe and it was one of my favorite things to eat growing up. It calls for pretty common ingredients and it’s totally no-fuss to prepare. I like to make it on a Saturdays or a Sunday so I can enjoy the aroma of it while I do laundry or clean the house. Even if you’re not hungry when you start it, you will be after it simmers on the stove awhile.

I called my friend Michelle for the recipe because I forgot to bring a copy of it into work today. She reminded me that I made this for her when she had her first kid. I dropped it off with a box of spaghetti noodles, a loaf of garlic bread and some garlic butter. It became her family’s favorite spaghetti sauce recipe, too.

Heidi’s Mom’s Spaghetti Sauce
1 lb. ground beef
1 teaspoon salt
1 teaspoon pepper
½ teaspoon dried oregano
1 teaspoon fennel seed
1/8 teaspoon garlic powder
¼ cup chopped onion
2 cans (15 oz) tomato sauce

1. Brown the ground beef.

2. Toss the rest of the ingredients in the pot and simmer.
