Last month I wrote about my plans for baking mishloach manot to give to friends as Purim treats. I love giving food as gifts, and I love Purim because giving food is essential to the holiday.
A traditional Purim food is a pastry called hamantaschen, which means “Haman’s pockets.” These triangular filled pastries are reminders of Esther’s victory over villainous Haman, the biblical story of her forced marriage and bravery in protecting her fellow Jews. To celebrate the joy of Esther’s triumph, Purim is a day of feasting, and just ...

I made some caramels for a fundraiser at my niece’s preschool. My sister had stocked up on some cute seasonal containers after Christmas last year and she hand-stamped some little brown paper bags, so she packaged the candies up. I’m happy to report that all 13 containers sold out on the second day of the event. I think the adorable packaging was the trick. I mean, how could you resist these?

Are you like me, and you dread selecting holiday gifts for other people? I enjoy buying and wrapping and giving gifts, but I find that I sometimes second guess myself and, in the process, drive my husband crazy. He is the type of shopper who sees something, thinks that it might be a good gift and buys it on the spot. I, on the other hand, feel a need to shop around to find an improved version or better price.
When it comes to buying gifts, I can’t help but be a little biased. Being a cookbook author, I love all things related to food and I assume everyone else does too! That’s why I love to buy food related things for every occasion....

So I made it through Easter brunch. Everyone survived—I think they might actually have enjoyed themselves. There weren't few leftovers, which I took as a good sign. Each of my nieces and my nephew got two Easter basket; one from me (which I used as a centerpiece during the meal), and one from their grandma, They're probably still hyper from all the sugar.
The Breakfas...

Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday. I love anything heart-shaped including dishes, table runners, napkins, flower vases, candles and, of course, food. This may have something to do with the fact that Jack and I were married on Valentine's Day, many years ago.
It's not too early to start baking up something sweet for your sweeties. Here are some fun and delicious recipes that you can make over the upcoming weekend and if you are lucky you will have some left on February 14th....

I'm often invited to parties where everyone is asked to bring an appetizer—and the combination of appetizers that everyone brings becomes our dinner. These appetizers dinners are some of my most favorite meals.
Some of my friends expect me to bring an interesting appetizer—one that would take all day to make and/or maybe have an ingredient in it that they have never tasted. ...

One of our most memorable meals we've enjoyed was when I prepared a smoked crown roast of pork for our gourmet group. It was a recipe from the 1988 edition of the Best of Gourmet hard-cover cookbook titled, Crown Roast of Smoked Pork with Wild Rice, Fennel, and Sausage Stuffing. Jack and I have talked about it so often and over so many years that I decided it was time to try it again this holiday season. The recipes calls for a 21-rib crown roast of smoked (about 8 pounds). About a month ago, I started to ...

No word yet as to if there are any cookies left at the Courage Center. I’m told we wound up donating approximately 75 tins and 225 bags brimming with homemade goodies. That’s a heck of a lot of cookies. As I mentioned on ...

One fall many years ago, I was given lots of pumpkins as a gift. At the time I was living in a big old house in St. Paul with six friends. For weeks we used them as decorations on our dining room table, in our family room and well, all over the house. The night before Halloween we carved some of the pumpkins into jack-o'-lanterns. There were still a dozen or left and I decided to cook each one. After a week of eating pumpkin bread, pumpkin cookies, pumpkin baked Alask...
