Hostess Gifts
by jillbcooks 11/20/2009 5:22:00 PM

I am a big fan of hostess gifts—flowers, wine or little treats are my favorites to give for casual get togethers.  When invited to someone’s home for more formal meal, a hostess gift is customary.  I never expect them, but am delighted when I receive one.  The point of a gift is to show appreciation for a host’s thoughtfulness and to “give back” an experience that the host can enjoy later.  My favorite things to give are homemade muesli or granola, a book or a plant.  My favorite hostess gift that I have ever received was a drawing made by a 4 year old tucked into a frame.  Of course it is displayed in a place of prominence in my...

Minnesota State Fair
by jillbcooks 9/4/2009 4:40:00 PM

I love cookies.  I really do.  It is a simple pleasure, and one I like to indulge.  I like to experiment and find new recipes.  I especially like to get cookies that I hear others sing high praise for.  The Minnesota State Fair has a beloved cookie vendor called Sweet Martha's that people love.  I heard about it from just about everyone I met when I moved to Minnesota a couple summers ago.  I even heard about it on the message boards at Chow.com, a foodie website where users share food experiences.  My husband was set on getting some Sweet Martha's cookies, which, I should add, are sold in buckets....

One Million and Five Hundred and Seventy Six Thousand and Five Hundred and Fifty Nine Cookies
by jillbcooks 5/19/2009 8:53:00 AM

That’s a lot of cookies, and they’ve all come from the initiative of Jeanette Cram and her “crumbs,” a corps of volunteer of bakers and helpers.  Why did they bake all those cookies?  To send to soldiers serving on the front lines in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Through the Treat The Troops program, Cram has created a nationwide network to fulfill cookie requests made by and for deployed American soldiers living on the fronts in Iraq and Afghanistan.  Treat The Troops’ Mission Statement explains that “‘...

Betty Cookie Birthday Party Ideas
by jillbcooks 1/20/2009 7:24:00 AM

Cooking is a novel and fun way to celebrate a birthday. Cooking parties are appropriate for children ages 2 to teen, and can be scaled appropriately so kids can enjoy a hands-on experience.    Children as young as two could decorate cookies with adult support.  Children as young as four can make cookies from a mix with adult leading them through the steps.  Older elementary-age children can follow an adult’s directions.  Tweens can make cookies with an adult’s supervision.  The key to a successful kids cooking activity is preparation, so the entire process of cooking is controlled and kids can have a fun experience in a safe environmen...

…And Mom and Dad Can Hardly Wait for School to Start Again
by jillbcooks 12/30/2008 9:10:00 AM

With most schools still on break until next week, at this point parents could probably use some inspired ideas to keep kids happy and occupied.  There are a multitude of activities for kids and families like roller skating or going to an indoor water park.  But these activities can cost a lot.  Stuffing teddy bears at the mall or playing games at an arcade is fun for maybe one day of winter break, but done repeatedly these activities can break the bank.  A fun alternative is getting kids active in the kitchen.  Cooking and baking appeals to toddlers and teens, and it can create memories as meaningful as any that cost many times more money.  Who knows?...

Seven Days and Counting...
by AndiatBettyCrocker 2/7/2008 10:00:00 AM

Valentine's Day is my favorite holiday. I love anything heart-shaped including dishes, table runners, napkins, flower vases, candles and, of course, food. This may have something to do with the fact that Jack and I were married on Valentine's Day, many years ago. It's not too early to start baking up something sweet for your sweeties. Here are some fun and delicious recipes that you can make over the upcoming weekend and if you are lucky you will have some left on February 14th....

The Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookie Recipe
by AndiatBettyCrocker 1/15/2008 8:28:00 AM

There has been a lot of hype lately about the famous Neiman Marcus Chocolate Chip Cookie recipe—probably instigated by the Neiman Marcus department store chain since they are celebrating their 100th anniversary. I'd heard the urban myth for years that someone had to pay one million dollars for the recipe. Maybe you've heard a similar story? The Neiman Marcus recipe calls for coffee powder and since I love coffee ...
