When my friend and co-worker Jann wanted to make a birthday cake for her grandson, Evan, she decided to make a Campfire Cake. Jann and her husband, Tom, own a cabin in northern Minnesota and often entertain their grandkids there. In the evenings on a cool night they sit around a campfire and roast marshmallows to make s’mores. It’s their family tradition to make s’mores more interesting by using different chocolate candy bars rather than the traditional milk chocolate bars.
Jann made a few changes to the Campfire Cake recipe...

In just 15 minutes, you can make these garden-fresh Asian Chicken Roll-Ups for lunch or dinner. They are so easy to make, that even a two-year old can make them.
First, mix together peanut butter, teriyaki baste and glaze, brown sugar, water and oil; spread mixture on a flour tortilla.
Then sprinkle with cooked chicken, lettuce, shredded carrots and cilantro...

The stalls at the farmers’ market last Saturday were filled with fresh vegetables and flowers along with lots of delicious aromas and bright colors. Jack and I took Blake to the smaller market in downtown Minneapolis, located near the Mill City Museum. It was a very cool and cloudy morning but that didn’t stop us from having fun. ...

Here’s a way to have a quick and easy summer party—serve fruit fondue. All you need are platters of cut-up fresh fruit, pound cake (you can bake it or buy frozen pound cake) and a fondue sauce or two. You can keep the fondue warm in a 1 1/2-quart slow cooker.
We recently celebrated our technician, Kathy’s birthday with Milk Chocolate Fondue (we used dark chocolate chips instead of the milk chocolate chips) and Dulce de Lech Fondue (see recipe below). We served these fondues with fresh fruit, a scr...

What could taste better in the summer than chilled lime-flavored cupcakes with cream cheese frosting? These Key Lime Cupcakes start with a cake mix to which lime-flavored gelatin and Key lime juice are added. After baking, they are poked with a toothpick and a glaze of powdered sugar mixed with Key lime juice is drizzled over the tops. A scratch cream cheese frosting is mounded on the tops and fresh lime peel is added for a tasty and pretty garnish.
This recipe is in the newest issue of the ...

I was invited to a special advance screening of the movie, Julie & Julia last week, and I can hardly wait until it is released on August 7th, so I can see it again. It is a wonderful, summer “feel-good” movie that made laugh for two hours straight.
The movie is based on two true stories. One is about a young woman, named ...

I joined a CSA (Community Supported Agriculture) program this year. CSAs are a method of trade between grower and members, which allows members to eat fresh, local, and sustainably grown produce at a reasonable price, according to the Honey Creek Farm website. By joining a CSA, you remove the middleman and help forge an important relationship that connects you with the source of your food.
I wrote a check to the Honey Creek Farm in May and am now getting bags of fresh produce every Thursday afternoon. Since May, we have already enjoyed lots of radishes, arugula, broccoli, spinach, ka...

It was a cool (temps in the 50s in July!) and overcast week that Jack and I spent at our cabin. We didn’t let the weather stop us from having a nice vacation though. In fact, we invited some friends to join us for the weekend. Here is a photo of our cabin taken from across the lake. The big building on the left is our garage.
