Attention all Hockey moms, PTO groups, church groups, charitable running clubs! Raise money for your charity.
When I take a particular highway when I go adventuring, when driving from the exit to my house I pass a church that has a prominent sign in front of it that always has information about different events and fundraisers. The sign piqued my attention a few weeks ago as it promoted something called Turkey Bingo. I admit that I never heard of such a thing, and went home to Google it. In retrospect, I suppose it should have been totally obvious, it is charitable bingo with turkeys (and cash) as prizes. It is definitely a fun idea. I’m not certain if this is a Midwestern thing, but I never heard of it growing up in Buffalo, New York (I’d never heard of meat raffles either, which are held in restaurants and bars, until I moved to Minnesota, so maybe “winning” meat is a Midwestern thing.). Driving by the church today, I saw that their sign changed and was advertising in bold letters CARAMEL ROLL AND CRAFT SALE. I definitely like the sound of that—caramel rolls would definitely make any holiday craft sale way better. I can just picture tray after tray of giant, gooey caramel rolls. What a fun community tradition.
Maybe the reason the sign catches my attention is because it is almost always food related? As a former teacher, I have been a part of many food-related fundraisers, including babka sales and weekly doughnut sales on Friday mornings. I think that the most fun fundraisers, though, are pancake breakfasts. From September 22 through February 28, 2011, Bisquick will award $250 grants to qualified nonprofit organizations and schools to support their pancake breakfast fundraising efforts. Simply register to become a member of Bisquick Pancake Nation and apply for a grant. It’s that easy!
