Today is my mom’s birthday: Happy Birthday, Mom!
Mom is having a milestone birthday this year. Last month all the girls in our family got together to celebrate with my mom on a cruise. We had a terrific time, and even though I do appreciate my family, it made me feel even more grateful for my mom. She lives quite a distance away, and while we might not see each other as often as we’d like, I do think about her influence on me every day. I get my love of food and passion for cooking from my mom, who was known as the good cook in her family. A few years ago, mom made cookbooks for my sisters and me as Christmas gifts. She went to the effort of customizing the recipes in them, compiling our specific favorites. Even more remarkable, she handwrote everything, which makes the recipes really feel connected to her through her unique cursive writing.

I have to laugh at the specificity, too. If you can make it out, the recipe note above says “If Jill’s not home, mom puts mushrooms in the sauce.” Yeah, I do hate mushrooms.
The best recipes, in my opinion, are tried and true ones passed along by people who are passionate about them. Family, friends are great resources, and web sites that have recipe sharing are treasure troves for new cooking and baking ideas. The Betty Crocker Recipe Box has recently been revamped. Now you can add your personal recipes, store them in your Recipe Box and publish them on the site. This is an easy way to organize your own recipes, maybe so you can great cookbooks for people you love.
