Berry Cobbler: Harbinger of Summer

Whenever we have guests over in the summer for grilling, I usually make cobbler with a seasonal fruit for dessert. We were invited to a barbecue this past weekend, and I brought triple berry cobbler and vanilla ice cream. The meal was just the right taste to be a harbinger of barbecue season—ribs made two ways, griddled potatoes, broiled zucchini and a crisp lettuce salad. My dessert was a hit. The hostess—a really great, experienced cook—asked me for the recipe, which is a high compliment.
Where I grew up outside Buffalo, New York near the Niagara Escarpment, the height of summer came when peaches were ripe. There was even a peach festival, where I fell in love with peach cobbler. My mom did not make crisps, betties or cobblers, and often opted for brownies or crisp rice treats in the summertime. I remember loving this particular cobbler, sold at the festival by a church as a fundraising project. The cobbler had an almost butter cookie taste to it, but a cake-like texture. This recipe reminds me of it. I just can’t wait until the peaches are ready. Until then, blackberries, raspberries and blueberries will have to do.
