This week alone my husband and I received three wedding invitations in the mail. I love weddings. I love paying attention to the details that you just know that a bride has agonized and delighted over. I am happy to attend these events, and part of the fun to me is selecting gifts. I do love to look at registries. They are an interesting window into people’s tastes. I registered for many traditional things like china and serving ware. I received many lovely things I had registered for, but enjoyed gifts that were not on my registry at all. Now, almost ten years later, those unexpected surprises are the gifts that stand out in my mind.
One unexpected gift we received was a picnic basket from my cousin. I think I am going to buy this similar picnic backpack for a couple who hikes and bikes a lot. I imagine that they will enjoy this for years to come. I am going to add a bottle of wine and a copy of Alice Water’s The Simple Art of Food.
Another unexpected gift was a pasta machine. I have loved using it for making all kinds of pasta like lasagna sheets and pierogi dough. I think a pasta machine, a cookbook and great lasagna pan is the perfect gift for another couple.
Over on Betty Crocker’s Facebook Page, there has been discussion lately about how Facebookers have gotten the “big red” Betty Crocker Cookbook as a shower or wedding gift. Since it first came out in 1950, I bet a bunch of brides have made this a well-loved cookbook in their collections.
What is the best food-related wedding gift that you have received or given?
I gave that pretty bride above (my sis) a bunch of diner-style kitchen glassware, of which I am very jealous!
