Olympics Inspired Pot Luck Party
by jillbcooks  2/11/2010 4:17:00 PM

I am invited to an Olympics themed party tomorrow evening to celebrate the beginning of the Vancouver 2010 games.  We are going to eat, visit, watch the Opening Ceremonies and sign up for a “fantasy Olympics” (think fantasy football) contest.

Each of us is bringing a dish to share.  The host assigned each of us a country, and I was lucky enough to draw Canada.  My mom is Canadian, so lots of our favorite family dishes are traditional Canadian ones.  I am going to bring tourtiere, which is spiced French Canadian meat pie.  I am cheating and using a Pillsbury Pie Crust rather than make it from scratch.    Since my husband is coming along, we are bringing a second dish, a pan of Nanaimo Bars, which were created in British Columbia.  My Canadian aunts always made Nanaimo Bars for Christmas, so I remember them fondly from my childhood.  One aunt stuck to the traditional recipe, with a cookie base, custard and chocolate topping.  My other aunt would mix it up—make chocolate mint filling or put candied cherries in the custard.  This recipe includes coconut, which is a fun twist on the original.

Are you going to watch the Olympics?
