Remember Classroom Valentine's Parties?

Remember classroom Valentine’s Day parties way back in the day? The ones that happened when you were in third grade in, say, 1983 (or before) like me? This was just about the time that holidays like Valentine’s Day started to become the explosions of consumer goods that they are today. Instead of a small display of cards and treats at stores, lots and lots of brands began packaging Valentine’s candy, cookies and novelties. I loved pouring over all the products in the aisle at the local drug store, planning ever so carefully which packs of cards I might coax my parents into buying to bring to the party at school. I loved the Valentines that had lollipops that tucked into the cards, and I loved buying pretty little foiled chocolates and taping them to cards to give to classmates.

I remember that teachers gave out lists of the class rosters so that we could address our cards for the class. We would then deliver each card to the other students’ “mailboxes” which were large pockets made from construction paper that we taped to the fronts of our wooden desks. After delivering our cards, we had a party with lots of treats. No clementines or rice cakes at these parties—cookies, cupcakes and red punch. Half the fun for me was bringing in some treat that was a showstopper (funny how I am still the exact same as an adult). One year my mom made a cookie cake just like the ones sold at the mall—a large round cake-sized cookie that she baked in a deep dish pizza pan and decorated with chocolate and vanilla buttercream frosting. It was a huge hit then, and still is whenever I make one to share with friends. Just follow the directions for making chocolate chip cookies (or buy the premade dough) and press the dough into a pizza pan. Bake until the center is no longer soft and a toothpick comes out clean.
Find recipes for cookie pizzas/cookie cakes. I like this Chocolate Cookie Pizza.
