When I was a kid, my mom used the deep fryer to make dinner, ahem, well, quite often. A treat that we would sometimes see along with our chicken nuggets and crinkle cut fries was something my mom called kugala frits. I have no idea how to spell it, and after lots of exhaustive research, have never come up with an actual recipe for it. My mom doesn’t even remember where it came from. Basically, kugala frits are chunks of cheddar cheese wrapped in bread dough and fried. The closest cousin I’ve found for them is an Italian dish called Panzerotti, which is a fried cheese filled pastry. Kugala frits are easy to make with basic ingredients (mom always used Pillsbury biscuit dough or thawed frozen bread dough) and 1/2 inch chunks of cheese cut from half pound medium cheddar blocks. Wrap the cheese chunk in dough and deep fry at about 400 degrees for about 5 minutes or until dough is cooked.
Kugala frits are a simple, but addictive pleasure. We made some for a party a few years ago (probably about 12 dozen) and they were all eaten up within an hour of our party starting. We made a batch in our new deep fryer. They taste as good as they look.

If you’ve had these before or know a recipe for these, please leave a post. I’d love to know what you call these fried dough balls of deliciousness.
