The book (in photo above) was published in 2010 and is a collection of the letters from Julia (Child, of course) to her American pen pal, Avis DeVoto and from Avis back to Julia. They “met” when Avis sent a letter to Julia as a response to one Julia had sent to Avis’ husband (Bernard DeVoto) about an article he had written in Harper’s (magazine) on American knives in 1952. Both highly intelligent, well-traveled, well-read women, they became instant friends.
It was Avis, who managed to put Julia’s manuscript for Mastering the Art of French Cooking into the hands of Judith Jones at the Knopf publishing company and the rest, as they say, is history. But, it wasn’t all that easy. Julia, along with her French partners Simone Beck and Louisette Bertholle (who played a very minor role in the creation of the masterpiece on French cooking for American households) worked on testing, writing the recipes and trying to find a publisher for the book, for close to 10 years. Even for Julia, “things” were never easy. If you want to know more about how this (now famous) cookbook came to be, order a copy of As Always, Julia.
In honor of Julia and her cookbook, here is a recipe for Chocolate Mousse, which was introduced to Americans by Julia Child on television during the sixities. Bon Appétit!
