Ultimate Turtle Brownies
This brownie recipe combines two American favorites: moist and chocolately brownies (click on: history of the brownie) with turtle candy (based on a famous American candy recipe with soft caramels, pecans and chocolate). It uses Betty Crocker® brownie mix.
This wonderfully, rich and gooey bar got me thinking about other American foods and ingredients. David Lebovitz in his book, The Sweet Life in Paris states, “My precious stash of America goodies—molasses, organic peanut butter, dried sour cherries, non-stick spray, wild rice and Lipton Onion Soup Mix –gets crammed in the back of one of my two (kitchen) cabinets, reserved for special occasions.”
I sent an email to friends living in Moscow to ask them, what ingredients they missed the most (while living abroad) and their list came back to me with the following: unsalted crunchy peanut butter, sweet pickle relish, real maple syrup, good oatmeal, squeeze bottle of Hellmann’s real mayo and decaf instant coffee and tea, baking powder and soda. Chocolate chips weren't on their list but they stated that EVERYONE else who is American brings those too.
If you have ever lived in another country or are now, what is on your list for "must have" American ingredients and products?
