PUPsicles: Homemade frozen treats for your dog!
by AndiatBettyCrocker  6/4/2010 2:37:00 PM

Hi Again, Kristen Here!

It may not be the dog days of summer yet but it has been pretty toasty up here in Minnesota. Don’t get me wrong… I’m loving it! But, my four-legged furry friend is having a harder time getting through the heat then I am.

I’d like to introduce you to… Nugget; my 9 month old labradoodle puppy.  She does everything at about 100 mph… no joke. So, last night I made her something special... pupsicles!

I just poured beef broth into an ice cube tray and froze it for a few hours to make a frosty and irresistibly tasty treat for Nugget.

After nudging it around on the deck for a while, she carried it out into the lawn and happily nibbled away on it…

Sucess! A fun and special way to cool down your pup this summer!

(I would strongly suggest this as an ‘outside only’ treat because I know that I wouldn’t want a beef broth stain on my carpet!)

May I have another??

Do you make special treats for your pet?

That is a really neat idea. Has your vet OKed this for the dog? I have a Jack Russel Shi Tzu mix (I won't tell you what we call him for short) named Toby. I might have to try that with him.

I found a book(s) on Amazon.com and have ordered them and they have some great recipes but I found one and my pets love them but I just don't take the time to make them. It is for a baked treat so if anyone wants the recipe I can send it to them. Could you also dilute fruit juice and freeze it?

HotMama - That is a great question! I did check with my vet and she said that as long as you use a lower/no sodium broth or dilute the broth with water then you should be fine.

CMeliet - Please do! Let us know how it goes; I'm sure your dog will love them!

DogMommy07 - That sounds like a fun weekend project! I'm not sure about the fruit juice treats. You might want to ask your vet to be safe.

Please make sure that any broth you are using doesn't contain onions as they are toxic to dogs. Same for fruit juices, many juices have added sweetners that are toxic to dogs. Grapes (and raisins) themselves are toxic and can induce kidney failure. The ASPCA has a link on there website that lists many common plants and foods that are toxic.
